Polyformals

Among the more than several uses for polyethers in ordn application is as a binder for extrusion cast expls (Ref 3), and in a caseless propint charge where the charge is used as an ammo element (Ref 5). Also, some development work on the use of Poly acetal resins (polyform aldehyde)1 as a fuel has been done by Singhal T ien yief 7)... 

Polyforming [Polymerization reforming] An early process for converting gas-oil to gasoline. It combined thermal cracking with polymerization.

This study will show an approach to materials which have many of the desirable features of the poly(phthaladehyde)-onium salt imaging system but do not suffer from the problem of spontaneous gaseous material evolution upon irradiation. The new polyformal-based imaging systems all have a "built-in" thermal activation requirement which allows for image self-development outside of the exposure tool.

Watanabe [89] has used ultrasound in the synthesis of aromatic polyformals. Using a condensation reaction between a dihaloalkane and diphenol (Fig. 5.46) he was able to show that in the presence of ultrasound higher yields and larger molar masses were obtained.

Polyforming a process charging both C3 and C4 gases with naphtha or gas oil under thermal conditions to produce gasoline. 

The polyformal (I) was characterized by wet chemical and infrared analyses, and by cryoscopic molecular weight determinations. For the latter, the preferred method was the freezing point depression of an ethylene bromide solution. The other polyacetals were characterized primarily by infrared analysis and molecular weight determinations. 

When the same procedure was repeated with 60 grams (0.05 mole) of polyformal prepolymer of molecular weight 1180, a polyurethane with similar physical properties was obtained (sample 3, Table I). 

Branched polyformals and copoly formats, (1), were prepared Heuer [2] and used in the production of molded articles.

Linear (co)polyformals consisting of biphenyl derivatives have been prepared having Mw s of at least 10,000 daltons and reduced moisture absorption. These thermosets are used in molding components and related applications where low moisture absorption is required.

Additional polyformals, (I), used as protective coatings on polycarbonate surfaces were prepared by the author [1] in a subsequent investigation. 

Branched (co)polyformals were prepared by the author [6] that had reduced water uptake, improved hydrolytic stability, and they were used in the preparation of molded articles.
