Characteristics of the Graft Polymerization Process. Under certain polymerization conditions such as when the vinyl chloride/polyethylene ratio is high, heterogeneous products are obtained in the sense that, beside the polyethylene grains gorged with PVC, independent suspension PVC particles are formed. Since the optimum conditions for production of PVC and graft copolymers are not necessarily identical, it is advantageous to avoid the formation of these independent PVC particles. [Pg.150]

When, in the case of low-density polyethylene, a vinyl chloride/ polyethylene ratio near 1 is used, the system is close to saturation and a few per cent of a fine powder containing principally PVC may form. This is avoided when a vinyl chloride/polyethylene ratio of 0.6 is used, with injection of the rest of the vinyl chloride during the polymerization. This way, the system is always definitely below saturation. Moreover, this technique improves the grafting efficiency (defined by the ratio grafted VCx 100/total polymerized VC), which increases with a decreasing vinyl chloride/polyethylene ratio during polymerization. [Pg.153]

The film tube is collapsed within a V-shaped frame of rollers and is nipped at the end of the frame to trap the air within the bubble. The nip roUs also draw the film away from the die. The draw rate is controlled to balance the physical properties with the transverse properties achieved by the blow draw ratio. The tube may be wound as such or may be sHt and wound as a single-film layer onto one or more roUs. The tube may also be direcdy processed into bags. The process yields a random, completely soluble polymer that shows no evidence of crystallinity of the polyethylene type down to —60°C. The polymer backbone is fully saturated, making it highly resistant to ozone attack even in the absence of antiozonant additives. The fluid resistance and low temperature properties of ethylene—acryUc elastomers are largely a function of the methyl acrylate to ethylene ratio. A somewhat different approach to the production of thermoplastic polyolefin rubbers has been adopted by Allied Chemical with their ET polymers. With these materials butyl rubber is grafted on to polyethylene chains using a phenolic material such as brominated hydroxymethyl phenol. The initial grades of these polymers, which were introduced commercially towards the end of the 1970s, had polyethylene butyl rubber ratios of 50 50 and 75 25. The final step in the process of standardizing our columns was to try and maintain the high quality of columns from batch to batch of gel from the manufacturer. This was done by following the basic procedures outlined earlier for the initial column evaluation with two exceptions. First, we did not continue to use the valley-to-peak ratios or the peak separation parameters. We decided that the D20 values told us enough information. The second modification that we made was to address the issue of discontinuities in the gel pore sizes (18,19). To do this, we selected six different polyethylenes made via five different production processes. These samples are run every time we do an evaluation to look for breaks or discontinuities that might indicate the presence of a gel mismatch. Because the resins were made by several different processes, the presence of a discontinuity in several of these samples would be a strong indication of a problem. Table 21.5 shows the results for several column evaluations that have been performed on different batches of gel over a 10-year period. TPEs from blends of rubber and plastics constitute an important category of TPEs. These can be prepared either by the melt mixing of plastics and rubbers in an internal mixer or by solvent casting from a suitable solvent. The commonly used plastics and rubbers include polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), polystyrene (PS), nylon, ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber (EPDM), natural rubber (NR), butyl rubber, nitrile rubber, etc. TPEs from blends of rubbers and plastics have certain typical advantages over the other TPEs. In this case, the required properties can easily be achieved by the proper selection of rubbers and plastics and by the proper change in their ratios. The overall performance of the resultant TPEs can be improved by changing the phase structure and crystallinity of plastics and also by the proper incorporation of suitable fillers, crosslinkers, and interfacial agents. [Pg.634]
