It might then be oxidized enzymatically with hydrogen peroxide to produce a polymer, as described in Chap. 9. A final cure with diisocyanates or bisoxazolines would yield the equivalent of a phenol-formaldehyde resin without use of the carcinogenic formaldehyde. Terephthalic acid for polyethylene terephthalate) might be made by the oxidation of p-cymene, although two carbon atoms would be... [Pg.366]

One problem relating to the oxidation of hydrocarbons with hydrogen peroxide is the difficulty of having appreciable concentrations of the non-polar substrate and the polar oxidant together at the catalytic centre. One approach is based on the attachment of a mixture of polyethylene oxide) and polypropylene oxide) to a silica, followed by the physisorption of methylrhenium trioxide (Figure 4.7) allow the efficient mixing of both reaction partners.81 The material catalyses the efficient epoxidation of alkenes with hydrogen peroxide. [Pg.78]

Surface oxidation reactions have been carried out on a number of polymers, particularly polyethylene. Surface oxidation techniques include the use of corona discharge, ozone, hydrogen peroxide, nitrous acid, alkaline hypochloride, UV irradiation, oxidizing flame, and chromic acid The reactions lead initially to the formation of hydroperoxides, which catalyze the formation of aldehydes and ketones and finally, acids and esters. Surface oxidation treatment has been used to increase the printabdity of polyethylene and poly(ethylene terephthalate) and to improve the adhesion of polyethylene and polypropylene to polar polymers and that of polytetrafluoroethylene to pressure-sensitive tapes. Surface-oxidized polyethylene, when coated with a thin film of vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, and acryhc acid terpolymers becomes impermeable to oxygen and more resistant to grease, oil, abrasion, and high temperatures. The greasy feel of polyethylene has also been removed by surface oxidation. [Pg.150]

Two water-soluble polyethers, polyethylene oxide and polymethyl vinyl ether, were UV irradiated in hydrogen peroxide solutions. It was shown that hydroxy and hydroperoxy radicals accelerate oxidative degradation of these polymers. Hydroxy and probably hydroperoxy radicals can abstract hydrogen from methylene groups in both polymers. As a result of further oxidative reactions, different carbonyl, hydroxy and hydroperoxy groups are formed. A mechanism for the formation of these groups is proposed. 8 refs. [Pg.112]
