Polychlorinated dibenzodioxins monitoring

Consequently, they are able to integrate pollutant levels over a broad area by bioaccumulation (Furness, 1993). A bird egg, unlike a mammalian fetus, is an isolated and independent metabolic system. In addition, persistent, bioaccumulative and lipophilic pollutants (e.g. PCBs, polychlorinated dibenzodioxins and furans) are known to biomagnify in the egg yolk and result in concentrations of orders of magnitude higher than the ambient concentrations in the diet of the female bird (Kleinow et al., 1999). The contaminant levels in waterbird eggs, therefore, provide important and useful information for monitoring changes in environmental quality. [Pg.378]

Pine needles from North America have also been used for monitoring polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (Safe et al. 1992) the spectrum of the congeners which was dominated by octachlorodibenzodioxin and the most highly chlorinated dibenzofurans suggested their ori-... [Pg.176]

In addition to the thermogravimetry experiments, batch pyrolysis experiments continuously monitoring HCl formation were performed with PVC to determine the optimum temperature for HCl formation. Under conditions of maximum HCl formation, PVC was pyrolyzed with and without oxygen in a fluidized bed reactor and the formation of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) measured. Avoiding the formation of these highly toxic compounds would be a critical element in any waste stream processing scheme. [Pg.145]

GC-EI-MS can be used for the direct analysis of mixtures, e.g., to analyze synthetic by-products an advantage that made GC-EI-MS benchtop instruments become widespread in modem synthetic laboratories. The GC-EI-MS combination is especially successful in monitoring environmental pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofuranes (PCDFs), or other volatile organic compounds (VOCs). [Pg.241]
