Clay and mineral fillers have been used for reducing production costs and improving the comprehensive water absorbing properties of superabsorbent materials For example, a poly(acrylic acid)/mica superabsorbent has been synthesized with water absorbency higher than 1100 g H20/g In a typical method of preparation, acrybc acid monomer is neutralized at ambient temperature with an amount of aqueous sodium hydroxide solution to achieve 65% neutralization (optimum) Dry ultrafine (<0.2 tm) mica powder (10 wt%) is added, followed by cross-linker N,N-methylene-bisacrylamide (0.10 wt%) and radical initiator, potassium persulfate The mixture is heated to 60-70°C in a water bath for 4 h. Johnson et al. [27] report that polysulfone and poly(vinyl acetate) show enhanced low-temperature -loss transitions in proportion to the unclustered water. Clustered water in poly(vinyl acetate) has no effect on Tg, although shifts with increasing amount of unclustered water. Fuzek [3T] found that water absorbed by synthetic fibers and silk at room temperature and 65% RH substantially lowers Tq s, the effect being reflected in several different fiber properties. Polyimide. Polyimide is a biaxiaHy oriented high performance film that is tough, flexible, and temperature- and combustion-resistant. Its room temperature properties compare to poly(ethylene terephthalate), but it retains these good characteristics at temperatures above 400°C. Its electrical resistance is good and it is dimensionally stable. The principal detriment is fairly high moisture absorbance. The main uses are for electrical insulation, particularly where high temperatures are prevalent or ionizing radiation is a problem. These poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) silane coupling agents were copolycondensed with tetraethoxysilane by acid-catalyst to produce poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline)-modified silica gel. The composite gel from 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline was also homogeneous and transparent glass. Poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline)-modified silica gels, especially gels based on poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) absorbed water and also organic solvents such as DMF or alcohols as shown in Table 7. Another limitation is related to the fact that synthetic poly(amino acids) have rather unfavorable material properties. For instance, most synthetic poly (amino acids) derived from a single amino acid are insoluble, high-melting materials that cannot be processed into shaped objects by conventional fabrication techniques. The often undesirable tendency to absorb a significant amount of water when exposed to an aqueous environment is another common property of many poly (amino acids) (7). Finally, high molecular weight poly-(amino acids) are best prepared via N-carboxyanhydrides which are expensive to make. Hence poly(amino acids) are comparatively costly polymers, even if they are derived from inexpensive amino acids (8). [Pg.196]
