Pollution threats

These components concentrate in aqueous streams and represent a serious pollution threat because of their toxicity. For this reason they must be recovered from any aqueous waste stream before leaving a plant.

A critical part of the stratosphere is the UV-absorbing ozone that it contains. Often referred to as the ozone layer, stratospheric ozone is dispersed widely over several kilometers of altitude in the stratosphere. Stratospheric ozone actually constitutes only a minuscule fraction of the atmosphere s total mass, although it is absolutely essential in protecting humans and other organisms on Earth from deadly solar UV radiation.
