Pollution control technologies electrostatic precipitators

Air pollution control technology includes thermal incineration, catalytic incineration, carbon adsorption, absorption, condensation, baghouse filtration, wet scrubbing, and electrostatic precipitation. 

The principal technological changes in the engineering control of air pollution were the perfection of the motor-driven fan, which allowed large-scale gas-treating systems to be built the invention of the electrostatic precipitator, which made particulate control in many processes feasible and the development of a chemical engineering capability for the design of process equipment, which made the control of gas and vapor effluents feasible. 

Pollution control devices for particulates do not depend upon new technology whereas SO2 control does. Since the first decade of this century, as a result of Cottrell s original work (9j, the electrostatic precipitator had been used to collect fly ash particulates. These devices were used on many of the older coal burning plants which had converted to oil. On the reconversion to coal, they were put back in operation or else new ESP units were put in the place occupied by the older ones.
