All plants pollinated by animal vectors benefit from flower-constant behavior since nectar removed by visitors not carrying conspeclflc pollen is wasted. However, rare or widely dispersed plants should be more strongly selected for adaptations that maximize pollinator constancy than should common or clumped plants (2). Perhaps in crownvetch there has been selection for constancy in flower visitors using high concentrations of NPA to exclude all but specific pollinators. [Pg.108]
