Poisons List Order

The sale of non-medicinal poisons in England, Scotland and Wales is controlled by the Poisons Act 1972, the Poisons Rules 1982 and the Poisons List Order 1982 and amending Orders made to these by statutory instruments. In Northern Ireland, non-medicinal poisons are covered by the Poisons (NI) Order 1976 and the Poisons (NI) Regulations 1983.

In the author s opinion, the namral poisons in order of lethality are given in Table 5.3. In addition to the numerous toxic substances listed in this table, breakdown products may need to be considered. 

Table 4 lists a few selected catalysts for the SRE reaction in the middle temperature range, between 450 and 600 °C and high temperature range, above 600 °C. Under these conditions, the listed catalysts produce relatively large amounts of CO which is a poison to the PEM fuel cells. These catalytic processes would therefore require a multi-stage CO clean-up process in the downstream in order to produce pure H2 suitable for fuel cells. 

The most glamorous and popular poison is potassium cyanide. You can order it from several of the chemical suppliers listed in this volume. 

In order to evaluate the solvent toxicides, their LDjo values (oral administration to rats) are listed in Table 23. Since most cases of solvent poisoning are caused by inhalation of solvent vapors, the LCjq values are also given. 

These compounds are of particular interest since many of them have poisonous properties. In plants, their presence is restricted to a few orders of the dicotyledons. A number of the more important alkaloids, with their sources, are listed in Table 4.3. The alkaloid in ragwort, for example, attacks the liver and much of this organ can be destroyed before symptoms appear. Another nutritionally significant source of alkaloids is the fungus ergot, which grows on cereal grains (see Chapter 22).

Because of its use in OP pesticide poisoning, much has been published about the doses of atropine required, which in some cases can be very high in order to contain a persistent bradycardia. The reader is referred to specialised texts listed at the end of the chapter for more details.
