Platinate , hexafluoro

Interaction of the reagents in bromine as diluent to produce the trichlorotrifluoro-and then hexafluoro-platinates is so vigorous that increase in scale above 1 g of salt is not recommended.

The magnetic susceptibility of the oxyfluoride follows the Curie-Weiss law (6 = —6°) over the temperature range 88—294°K. The magnetic moment, /left = 2-46 B.M. at 20 . is compatible with two unpaired electrons, one associated with an 02 ion, the other with the d system of an octahedral hexafluoro-platinate(v) ion. 

The yellow solid resembles nitrosyl hexafluoro-platinate(v), NO+[PtFj], in appearance, and shows a similar intense absorption in the infrared at 640—650 cm. . attributable to the octahedral v, vibrational mode of PtF,. The magnetic susceptibility of the compound obeys the Curie-Weiss Law in the range 77—298°k with 6 = 35°. As indicated in Table 1 this behaviour is intermediate between that observed - for the quinquevaleht platinum compounds NO+[PtF,] and Pt Fj. ...

Prior to 1962 the rare gases were frequently called inert gases because chemical compounds with them were not known (there were a few clathrates and supposed hydrates ), but the realization that the ionization potential of xenon was sufficiently low to be accessible to chemical reaction led to the preparation of several fluorides, oxides, oxyfluorides, and a hexafluoro-platinate of xenon. Several unstable krypton and radon compounds have also been synthesized.
