Plastic green strength

Plasticizers. Plasticizers (36—38) are often added to a binder to reduce cross-link density and increase flexibiHty. Plasticizers improve toughness, springback, and flexibiHty, but degrade overall green strength. Additionally, plasticizers can increase the sensitivity of a binder system to moisture. [Pg.307]

A ceramic suspension consists of ceramic powder, a solvent, often a dispersant to stabilize the ceramic powder ag2iinst a omeration, a polymeric binder to provide green strength after the green body has been dried, and often a plasticizer to lower the glass transition of the polymeric binder. All these additives must be compatible so the ceramic suspension has the desirable properties needed for green body fabrication. Many of these formulations used in industry are very secretive. [Pg.612]

The preform expands due to relaxation and recovery. The pressure placed on the molded resin exerts three types of changes in the particles of resin. Resin particles undergo plastic deformation and are intermeshed together leading to the development of cohesive or green strength. Particles also deform elastically and experience cold flow underpressure. The air trapped in the space between the resin particles is compressed. Removal of pressure allows the recovery of elastic deformation, which creates a quick snap back of the preform. Overtime, stress relaxation partly reverses the cold flow, and the preform expands. [Pg.163]
