Plasma sterilisation

For medical devices a number of processes are available such as ethylene oxide and low-temperature hydrogen peroxide gas plasma sterilisation. 

Gas sterilisation including gas plasma sterilisation Gas, penetrated with moisture, enters the material to be sterilised, which is followed by the elimination of the gas. The gas (ethylene oxide or hydrogen peroxide) alkylates the purine and pyrimidine bases in the RNA and DNA of micro-organisms.

At 70—140°C, peroxide is vaporised. Peroxide vapor has been reported to rapidly inactivate pathogenic bacteria, yeast, and bacterial spores in very low concentrations (133). Experiments using peroxide vapor for space decontamination of rooms and biologic safety cabinets hold promise (134). The use of peroxide vapor and a plasma generated by radio frequency energy releasing free radicals, ions, excited atoms, and excited molecules in a sterilising chamber has been patented (135). 

In order to conduct this test, erythrocytes are separated from plasma and the buffy coat and washed three times with five volumes of phosphate buffer saline (PBS, pH = 7.4). The RBCs are collected in a centrifuge under specified conditions (3000 g for 10 min at 25°C). The compacted cells are then suspended in four volumes of PBS for the experiment. The surfaces of all the experimental samples are sterilised for 30 min in ultraviolet light under a sterile laminar air hood.
