Plant-parasites impact

Robinson AF (2002) Soil and plant interaction impact on plant-parasitic nematode host finding and recognition In Lewis EE, Cambell LF, Sukhdeo MVK (eds) The Biochemical Ecology of Parasites. An epidemiological survey of complementary symptoms, reminiscent of the HR of terrestrial resistant plants, such as tip bleaching or accumulation of fluorescent aromatic compounds around the site of penetration of parasite propagules (Figs. 12.2 and 12.3), may facilitate the evaluation of the impact of host-microbe interactions in natural populations (Correa and Sanchez 1996 Ellertsdottir and Peters 1997 Bouarab et al. 2001a). This could allow one to test the importance of oxida-tive-burst-associated defense reactions in various biotic interactions. [Pg.263]

The major role of chemical defenses in plants is hypothesized to be increasing the impact of insect diseases, parasites, and predators. None of these factors alone provides an explanation of why evolutionarily labile insects rarely defoliate their long-lived hosts. However, interactions among all of them could increase the useful evolutionary lifetime of each and the effectiveness of all. In particular, chemical variability is observed to place insects in compromise situations which increase their exposure and susceptibility to natural enemies. [Pg.37]
