Plant growth plastics

From the chemical point of view, succinic acid and its anhydride are characterized by the reactivity of the two carboxyUc functions and of the two methylene groups. Uses range from pharmaceuticals to food, detergents, cosmetics, plastics and resins, plant growth regulators, textiles, photography, and gas and water treatment. [Pg.534]

Isophorone is a solvent for a large number of natural and synthetic polymers, resins, waxes, fats, and oils. Specifically, it is used as a solvent for concentrated vinyl chloride/acetate-based coating systems for metal cans, other metal paints, nitrocellulose finishes, printing inks for plastics, some herbicide and pesticide formulations, and adhesives for plastics, poly(vinyl) chloride and polystyrene materials (Papa and Sherman 1981). Isophorone also is an intermediate in the synthesis of 3, 5-xylenol, 3, 3, 5-trimethylcyclohexanol (Papa and Sherman 1981), and plant growth retardants (Haruta et al. 1974). Of the total production, 45-65% is used in vinyl coatings and inks, 15-25% in agricultural formulations, 15-30% in miscellaneous uses and exports, and 10% as a chemical intermediate (CMA 1981). [Pg.69]

At this level, ozone is a pollutant with a harsh odour. In humans and animals, it causes respiratory problems, including coughing, wheezing, and eye irritation. It retards plant growth, reduces the productivity of crops, and damages forests. Concentrations of ozone as low as 0.1 ppm (parts per million) can decrease photosynthesis by 50%. In addition, it damages plastics, breaks down rubber, and corrodes metals. [Pg.517]

Use UV absorber in plastics dye intermediate fungicide plant growth promoter. [Pg.15]

The effects of artificial mulches, including aluminum, plastic, paper, wood pulp and bitumen, on available soil nutrients should be minor since they do not add appreciable amounts of mineral or organic nutrients. Any effects that they might have would be largely on soil moisture and temperature, which might either increase or decrease microbial activities in the soil. If these mulclies increase plant growth, there would likely be an increase in the rhizosphere population, but this would have little effect on available soil nutrients. [Pg.508]

Man-made litter is more aesthetically objectionable to humans than biological waste. The reasons for this are deeply rooted in the human subconscious because it is evidently not natural . Plastics detritus is much more noticeable in fields and on the sea-shore and, even when it is ploughed into the soil, it interferes with plant growth. [Pg.123]
