Planning for Model Building

Two examples are provided here to illustrate nonlinear parameter estimation, model discrimination, and analysis of variance. 

Example 6.1. Discrimination Between Series and Parallel Models 

Suppose that some data are available for the concentration [B] of species B as a function of time in a constant-volume, isothermal batch reactor containing chemical species A, B, and C. Sixteen simulated replicate pairs of observations similar to those considered by Box and Coutie (1956) are given in Table 6.1 for the initial condition [A]o = 1, [B]o =[C]o = 0.
