PLA Injection Molding

The PVT relationship can be modeled mathematically by using the modified two-domain Tait model. This model is often used for numerical simulation of injection molding processes involving finite element analysis for predicting the shrinkage behavior of injection molded articles. The estimated parameter values for the modified two domain Tait model are shown in the inserts in Fig. 5.3. [Pg.144]

In general, injection molded PLA articles are relatively brittle. The brittleness of PLA has been attributed to the rapid physical aging of the polymer since ambient temperature is only about 25 °C below the Tg. The aging of PLA can be evaluated by studying the Tg region of a DSC scan and measuring the development of [Pg.144]

Polylactic acid resin pellets should be dried 4-6 hours to less than 400 ppm prior to blow molding into bottles. Blow molded preforms are injection molded with standard PLA injection molding conditions. [Pg.88]

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymers are similar in stmeture, but the acrylonitrile hardens the polymer. Minute rubber particles act as stress-relief centers, making it good for large objects luggage or car body parts. It can be chrome plated, foamed, injection molded, blown, and alloyed wiih other pla.siic. . [Pg.282]

PLA and PHB may be processed because of their thermoplastic properties in the usual thermoplastic processing systems by using extrusion, injection molding, melt spinning, blowing film, and melt-blown techniques. [Pg.202]

The leading producer of PHAs (mostly PHBV) is Metabolix, which originated from research and development on PHAs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Metabolix sells PLA In sheet and Injection molding grades, as well as additives for other plastics, under the Mirel name [6]. [Pg.148]

Injection mold-grade PLA can be injection molded on most conventional equipment, but there could be some torque limitations if the screw design has a high compression ratio. Compression ratios of 2.5 to 3 should be adequate and the recommended melting temperature is 200 to 205°C. Since PLA has a lower glass transition temperature (about 58°C) than PS or PET, it might take a little longer time to set up in the mold [30]. [Pg.871]

Recent researches in life cycle assessments (LCA) have also focused to enable PLA to find its place among traditional commodity polymers for many applications in the agricultural sector as well as in the packaging field (the food and nonfood sector). It was found that PLA can be processed like all other thermoplastic polymers with extrusion, injection molding, blow molding, thermoforming or fiber spinning processes into various products. [Pg.363]
