Pine Cleaner

In pine cleaners, the pine oil component can be in the 15 to 30% range, and in glass cleaners, the solvent far exceeds the amount of surfactant in the formulation. However, even in these types, water is still the predominant ingredient, as it is in the rest of the household cleaners.

Pine oil is a mixture of terpine-derived alcohols. It can be extracted from pine but is also synthetically made from turpentine, especially the a-pinene fraction, by reaction with aqueous acid. It is used in many household cleaners as a bactericide, odorant, and solvent. The major constituents of pine oil are shown here. 

Pine oil production in general has continued to decline. One of the principal factors is the decrease in the amount of pine oil used in cleaner and disinfectant products. The pine oil content of those products has dropped from 70—90% to 10—30% (116).

But as the postwar wave of innovations in both chemicals and pharmaceuticals leveled off in the 1960s, American Cyanamid responded more like a pharmaceutical competitor than a chemical one. It began as early as 1956 to acquire brand-name over-the-counter consumer chemical products, including in 1963 Breck shampoo and Pine-Sol cleaner, and in 1971 Pierre Cardin and Old Spice fragrances.
