A meta-analysis of 23 randomized chnical trials assessing the efficacy and tolerance of smooth muscle relaxants in irritable bowel syndrome has shown that these drugs are superior to placebo (2). Six drugs were analysed cimetropium bromide (five trials), hyoscine butyl bromide (three trials), mebeverine (five trials), otilium bromide (four trials), pinaverium bromide (two trials), and trimebutine (four trials). There was no overall significant difference in the frequency of adverse effects compared with placebo. [Pg.2225]
