This reaction was first reported by Piloty in 1910. It is the thermal transformation of enolizable ketazines into pyrrole derivatives in the presence of a catalytic amount of Lewis acid (e.g., ZnCl2) or Brpnsted acid (e.g., HCl) and is known as the Piloty pyrrole synthesis,Piloty reaction, Piloty cyclization, or Piloty synthesis."
