Physical chemistry courses grading

Three practical tasks are in the process of implementation in the training courses of physical chemistry for 4th grade students (1) the test of solubility of the substances in SC-CO2 (2) the determination of phase composition and equilibrium of two-component system and (3) the determination of critieal point using a unique fibre-optic densitometer. 

The participants in this study were chemistry, chemical engineering, or physics students in various upper-level classes at Purdue University in which quantum mechanics represents a sizeable portion of the material covered, if not the focus of the entire course. We had prior approval from the instructors to observe their classes and to interact with their students, and from the institution s IRB to do the study. All of the students who participated in the study were volunteers. Students were informed that participation in the study was not a criterion their instructors would use when assigning their grades. The students who participated in this study represented a good cross-section of the population enrolled in these classes, from students who did very well to those who struggled to pass. 

Selection of the proper filler is based on a number of factors. The most important, of course, is the improvements in processing and end properties that it will provide. However, other important considerations when one is selecting a filler include availability, cost, surface chemistry, water adsorption, oil adsorption, density, and other physical or chemical properties of the filler grade itself. 

William M. Jackson, University of California, Davis The kind of description that Joseph Francisco talked about is what we actually tried at University of California, Davis, with an NSF grant. It was in physical sciences and not just in chemistry. What we found was that just by putting freshmen in the research groups and laboratories of professors, students whose average grade point levels were Cs were raised in the basic core courses—chemistry, physics, and math and calculus were raised to Bs. They were doing research, and then we had some other interventions, but it was an observation that I had made before I got to the Davis campus.
