Photostability particle size

In any case, the ability to tune their luminescence characteristics by particle size control, combined with relatively high quantum yields, narrow fluorescence emission, very broad absorption spectra and photostability provide new solutions to many of the problems associated with traditional luminescence sensors and hold a strong promise for a completely new set of analytical applications with QDs.18... [Pg.381]

The direct and indirect effects of fillers oti the photostability of polymer compositions are well known. With the recent interest in nanopowdered fillers reports of their effectiveness as photostabilizers is beginning to be reported in the literature. For instance ZnO and Ti02 nanoparticles (primary particle size 25-70 nm) were studied in acrylic coatings. A layer that carried at least 5 weight percent of the nanoparticles was needed to shield the underlying layers from UV exposure and hence degradation [162]. Nanoscale titania was also evaluated as a stabilizer in epoxy coatings [163]. [Pg.861]

Particles in the nanometer-size regime necessarily have large surface-to-volume ratios approximately one-third of the atoms are located on the surfaces of 40 A CdS particles, for example. Furthermore, colloid chemical preparations typically result in the development of surface imperfections and in the incorporation of adventitious or deliberately added dopants. Such surface defects act as electron and/or hole traps and, thus, substantially modify the optical and electro-optical properties of nanosized semiconductor particles. Altered photostabilities [595], fluorescence [579, 594, 596, 597], and non-linear optical properties [11, 598-600] are manifestations of the surface effects in colloidal semiconductors. [Pg.124]

Gas-Solid Heterogeneous Reaction Mixtures. Gas-solid heterogeneous reaction mixtures may be advantageously irradiated in annular (immersion-type) photochemical reactors. Again, the content of solid particles is limiting the size and the productivity of the reactor system. This is of particular importance when the solid support is used to specifically adsorb substrates or products of the photochemical reaction the first to enhance specificity of radical substitution reactions [20], the latter to reach better photostability and to ensure optimal purity. [Pg.243]
