It can be observed from the Figure 1 that the sensitivity of I.I. system is quite low at lower thicknesses and improves as the thicknesses increase. Further the sensitivity is low in case of as observed images compared to processed images. This can be attributed to the quantum fluctuations in the number of photons received and also to the electronic and screen noise. Integration of the images reduces this noise by a factor of N where N is the number of frames. Another observation of interest from the experiment was that if the orientation of the wires was horizontal there was a decrease in the observed sensitivity. It can be observed from the contrast response curves that the response for defect detection is better in magnified modes compared to normal mode of the II tube. Further, it can be observed that the vertical resolution is better compared to horizontal which is in line with prediction by the sensitivity curves. [Pg.446]

In contrast to the ionization of C q after vibrational excitation, typical multiphoton ionization proceeds via the excitation of higher electronic levels. In principle, multiphoton ionization can either be used to generate ions and to study their reactions, or as a sensitive detection technique for atoms, molecules, and radicals in reaction kinetics. The second application is more common. In most cases of excitation with visible or UV laser radiation, a few photons are enough to reach or exceed the ionization limit. A particularly important teclmique is resonantly enlianced multiphoton ionization (REMPI), which exploits the resonance of monocluomatic laser radiation with one or several intennediate levels (in one-photon or in multiphoton processes). The mechanisms are distinguished according to the number of photons leading to the resonant intennediate levels and to tire final level, as illustrated in figure B2.5.16. Depth sensitivity is an equally important consideration in the analysis of surfaces. Techniques based on the detection of electrons or ions derive their surface sensitivity from the fact that these species cannot travel long distances in soflds without undergoing interactions which cause energy loss.
