PHOTODEGRADATION AND STABILIZATION OF COATINGS

Stabilization of organic coatings against photodegradation and photooxidation is a subject of obvious practical importance. The fundamental processes involved, including spectroscopy, photochemistry, energy transfer, and secondary reactions, have attracted scientists from diverse disciplines into this field. [Pg.315]

Ultraviolet radiation is the other main stress encountered by polymers in the coatings arena. One hundred percent acrylic polymers are highly resistant to photodegradation because they are transparent to the vast majority of the solar spectrum (59). When uv-absorbing monomers, such as styrene, are incorporated into the polymer backbone, the uv-resistance of the resulting polymer decreases dramatically and a more rapid deterioration in polymer/coating properties is observed. On the other hand, a noncovalently bound uv absorber, such as hydroxybenzophenone [117-99-7], further improves the uv stability of 100% acrylic polymers (59). [Pg.151]

The exterior durabiHty of relatively stable coatings can be enhanced by use of additives. Ultraviolet absorbers reduce the absorption of uv by the resins and hence decrease the rate of photodegradation. Eurther improvements can be gained by also adding free-radical trap antioxidants (qv) such as hindered phenols and especially hindered amine light stabilizers (HALS). A discussion of various types of additives is available (113). [Pg.348]

The lanthanides find some use as stabilizers for polymers. The coating of polycarbonate with a poly(vinyl alcohol) film containing CeCl3 inhibits photodegradation of the polycarbonate.151 The naphthenates of cerium, lanthanum and yttrium act as thermal stabilizers for polyorgano-siloxanes.152... [Pg.1027]
