Photochemistry in Synthesis

Photochemical reactions cover a most extensive range of chemical processes, some of which are totally beyond the realm of dark reactions. Industrial applications of photochemistry to the large scale synthesis of chemicals are however relatively unimportant, and this can be traced to the high cost of 

There are however a few important synthetic applications of photochemistry, and we shall consider here three representative examples.

This chapter is subdivided in two parts, the first briefly introduces the green aspect of photochemistry in synthesis, while the second outlines a series of representative reactions, subdivided according to the process involved. 

The decrease in size of the present volume relative to Volume 1 is mainly due to a tightening up in the presentation of the subject matter which is covered. The Reporters have attempted to achieve this end whilst still maintaining a comprehensive and a critical commentary. The decrease in size is also due to the omission of a chapter on Saturated Heterocyclic Ring Synthesis it is intended to remedy this unfortunate omission in Volume 3. We also plan to include a special review in Volume 3 covering the important recent developments in the utilization of Photochemistry in Synthesis . 

This report on General and Synthetic Methods is similar in scope and format to the previous two volumes in the series. Developments in the synthesis of saturated heterocycles, unfortunately omitted from Volume 2, are covered in this volume (Chapter 8), and a special report on Photochemistry in Synthesis (Chapter 10) is included.
