This book is dedicated to Prof. Ikuzo Tanaka, who was my Ph.D. supervisor in physical chemistry at the Tokyo Institute of Technology the late Prof. James N. Pitts, Jr., who was my postdoctoral supervisor in chemistry of the atmosphere at the University of California, Riverside and Prof. Barbara Finlayson-Pitts, at the University of California, Irvine, a friend of mine with whom I worked together on lab kinetics in the Pitts group at that time. Prof. Tanaka opened my eyes to research on photochemistry and molecular science from an international perspective in the then still economically poor and scientifically isolated country of Japan in the 1960s. Prof. Pitts led me to the study of chemistry on photochemical oxidants and tropospheric ozone, and I have been much affected by his pioneering stance to... [Pg.440]

Recently, other photochemical and thermal retro-Wolff rearrangements have been examined by several researchers.52 55 Under flash vacuum and pulsed pyrolysis conditions, Wentrup and co-workers observed the formation of (cyanovinyl)ketenes from aza fulvenones. Additionally, Moore and co-workers have done extensive work on the gas-phase photochemistry and molecular dynamics on the C2H2O surface using state-resolved spectroscopic methods. [Pg.1821]
