The vitamin also activates serine palmitoyltransferase, the first enzyme of phosphosphingolipid synthesis, and in bacteria it can, together with inorganic phosphate, replace part of the ATP requirement of galactocerebroside sulfo-transferase (Tsaioun, 1999).
