Phosphorus advection

Differences in transport, bioavailability and reactivity mean that the distinctions between dissolved vs. particulate and organic vs. inorganic phosphorus are important for the interpretation of environmental data. In the absence of significant advective transport, dissolved forms have a much greater mobility due to their molecular dif-fusivity. On the other hand, particulate compounds are removed from the water column... [Pg.350]

In principle, the advective transport of any chemical by any environmental medinm may be estimated nsing the same approach as the load of phosphorus in a stream chemical concentration in the environmental medium, rate of movement of the environmental medinm through the landscape, and the time period over which the movement takes place. The accuracy of the determination depends, as with stream loads, on the accuracy with which these parameters can be measnred. Performing accurate estimates of advective transport can present formidable challenges, even for order-of-magnitude estimates that generally suffice for risk-managanent purposes. [Pg.21]
