In Amsterdam, eventually, Georg Dol succeeded in making phosphine substituted basket molecules 11 based on diphenylglucoluril. Both tetradentate and bidentate phosphines were synthesized. In hindsight the syntheses look straightforward, but much effort went into this as for many steps the conditions had to be discovered, which is not reflected in the publications. This rather tedious job is a plea for supramolecular strategies to synthesize host molecules more rapidly and in larger variation ...
