Hydruxy-2-phenylethyl Phenyl Tellurium2 2.12 g (5 mmol) of bis[phenyltelluro]methane are dissolved in 20 ml of absolute TtfF under nitrogen, the solution is cooled to — 78° with stirring, and 3 ml (5.5 mmol) of a 1.82 M solution of methyl lithium are added dropwise over 1 min. Then 0.51 ml (5 mmol) pure benzaldehyde are added. The mixture is allowed to warm to 0° over 1.5 h and is then poured into water/dichloromethane. The aqueous phase is extracted three times with dichloromethane. The combined organic phases are dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered, and the solvent evaporated. The residue is chromatographed on 10 g of silica gel, eluting with 175 ml of cyclohexane, then 250 ml of cyclohexane/25 ml of diethyl ether, and finally 100 m/ of diethyl ether. The cyclohexane/diethyl ether fractions contain the product yield 0.95 g (60%) yellow oil.

The rate of cyclization of o-(l-phenylethyl)phenyl alkyl ketone 1 (R = alkyl, Ri = Me, R2 = H) decreases steadily from methyl to n-butyl and then remains constant within the limit of experimental error. The major factor in the large decrease in rate of cyclization with increasing chain length is most likely steric interactions.
