Phenylene-vinylene oligomers

Bushnell and co-workers [117] employed extensive molecular modelling to understand the nature of cis and trans isomerism in tetrahedral p-phenylene vinylene oligomers, and to aid the interpretation of time of flight mass spectrometry and ion mobility studies. Molecules such as T4R, shown in Figure 18, with four equivalent arms can be used to control the crystallinity in thin films. The authors reported the observation of a species in the mass spectrum resulting from the loss of an arm from the central carbon. This species will be referred to as P4R. 

In a similar approach, p-phenylene vinylene oligomers containing 3- to 6-mers have been grown on DOPO-Br capped NCs by homocoupling of l-bromo-2,5-di-n-octyl-4-vinylbenzene.133 Finally, using a one-step procedure, vinyl-terminated poly(hexylthiophene) has been grafted onto DOPO-Br coated NCs via Heck coupling.134...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy ( H, and other nuclei) is an extremely powerful analytical technique capable of providing unequivocal proof of a compound structure, but is usually applied to soluble materials. An interesting example in which this method provided the molecular structure, as well as information about conformations and molecular dynamics, for over 20 soluble n-alkoxy-substituted phenylene vinylene oligomers has been described [95].

Florian H. Gojny - studied chemistry at the University of Hamburg, focusing on Technical and Macromolecular Chemistry. In 2001, he obtained his Diploma in Chemistry. His Diploma thesis dealt with the Synthesis and photophysical characterization of 1,4-disubstituted 2,5-phenylene-vinylene oligomers . In 2001, he moved to the Technical University Hamburg-Harburg, Polymer Composites Group and has since then successfully worked on his PhD thesis Evaluation of the potential of carbon nanotubes for a mechanical reinforcement of epoxy matrices . He presented the results of his research at numerous international conferences and already published several papers in the field of nanotube research.
