A polyether-amide with a heat distortion temperature of 198°C has been prepared by Hitachi by interfacial polycondensation of 2,2-bis-[4-(4-aminophen-oxy)phenyl]propane (VIII) with a mixture of isophthaloyl- and terephthaloyl-chloride (IX and X) (Figure 18.29). 

The reaction of 3-benzoxepin with methyllithium results in the addition of two equivalents of the organometallic reagent and cleavage of the heterocycle. After hydrolysis l-[2-(Z)-prop-l-enyl)phenyl]propan-2-ol can be isolated, but no experimental data is available.216 Occasionally, a small amount of the tran.v-isomcr is obtained (less than 10% of the product).12... 

An analogous stereochemical outcome was observed when the ethylation of racemic 2-phenyl-propanal was catalyzed by (-)-(/ )-l-(diisopropylamino)-3,3-dimethyl-2-butanol36. The reaction was run to 70% conversion and again the ratio of syn- to anff-diastercomers was 3 1. In this case, however, the 7 -configurated aldehyde was predominantly consumed and both enantiomers of the aldehyde were predominantly alkylated from the Re-side. The optical purity of the unreacted (S)-2-phenylpropanal was 85.7% ee. 

The polymers of the present study were all based on the molecule bisphenol A (2,2-di(4-hydroxy-phenyl)propan). The molecular chains between crosslinks were built up as uniformly as possible in order to eliminate effects imposed by variations of the chemical composition. 

In recent years a lot of investigations have been made on this subject. E.g. Maciel and co-workers 41,42) found that several of the most prominent signals in the CP/M AS NMR spectra can be tentatively assigned for Norway spruce lignin to specific carbon atoms in the phenyl propane unit. Further also in the solid state the signals at about 105 ppm are indicative of hardwood.

In addition, dimer-type black developing fluoran compounds such as 2,2-bis(4-[6 -(/V-cyclohexyl-/V-methylamino)-3 -methylfluoran-2 -yl-amino]phenyl propane (59)60 are also proposed. Fluoran 59 has much lower solubility in organic solvents to improve image stability to plasticizer for use in thermosensitive recording label paper. 

Treatment of 2 -anilinofluorans with ketones such as acetone or 2-butanone in hydrochloric acid in the presence of iron(III) chloride gives 4,4 -alkylidenebis(A-fluoran-2-ylaniline)s. Thus, 2 -anilino-6 -(A-cyclohexyl-/V-methylainino)-3 -methylfluoran, (86) is treated with acetone in hydrochloric acid in the presence of iron(III) chloride to give 2,2-bis(4-[6 -(N-cy c 1 o hexyl-Ar-methy 1 amino)-3 -methylfluoran-2 -ylamino]phenyl (propane (87)60 (Eq. 9).
