Wieslawa Kudelska was born in Poland (1951) she studied pharmacy at the Medical University of Lodz, Poland (1969-74), where she also carried out her Ph.D. work (1974—82). She joined Professor G. Descotes group at the Claude-Bernard University of Lyon, France (1985). In 1988, she spent one year in USA working as a postdoctoral research fellow with Professor J. Loz at Laboratory for Carbohydrate Chemistry, Harvard University. From 1974 to 2004, she was employed at the Medical University of L6dz, Faculty of Pharmacy. Since 2004, she is a professor at the Jan Dlugosz University of Czestochowa, Poland. Her scientific interests are centered on carbohydrate chemistry. [Pg.852]

The Polish healthcare system is regulated by the Pharmacy Act established by the Polish Parliament on Medical Material, Pharmacies, Wholesaler Outlets and Pharmacy Inspection Act in October 1991 and came into force in February 1992 (Dziennik Ustaw 1991). Sternbach s father moved to Krakow in the re-created Poland and obtained a concession to open a pharmacy. Ai a pharmacist s son, Stembach was accepted at the Jagiellonian University School of Pharmacy, where he received both a master s degree in pharmacy and a PhD. in chemistry. With discrimination against Jewish scientists growing in Eastern Europe in 1937, Stembach moved to Switzerland to work with Ruzicka (p. (QO at the ETH (the Swiss Emeral Institute of Technology). In 1941, Hojfmann-LaRoche brought Stembach and several other scientists out of Europe.
