Pharmacopeia, Inc

Just as a library can be purchased, a library can also be rented. The owner of the library typically enters into an agreement with a drug company. The drug company pays to access and test the compound in a screen. If the compound eventually results in the discovery of a new drug, the owner of the library may receive a bonus. One company built on this type of business model was Pharmacopeia, Inc., of Cranbury, New Jersey.

Accelrys. A subsidiary of Pharmacopeia, Inc, Accelrys was originally a provider of molecular modeling software. They recently acquired several companies that provide offerings in the chemical information and bioinformatics areas. The company provides unique databases including several for reactions. 

Profile Founded in 1984, this privately held company provides molecular modeling and simulation software for both life and materials science research. The company employs more than 280 people (approximately half of whom are Ph.D. scientists) it operates sales offices around the world and a research and development facility in Cambridge, England. MSI s Combinatorial Chemistry Consortium addresses the full scope of the combinatorial chemistry process and is focused on maximizing the productivity of library design and analysis. In February 1998, Molecular Simulations Inc. and Pharmacopeia Inc. announced a definitive agreement whereby Pharmacopeia will acquire all of the outstanding stock of MSI. The transaction is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 1998 upon completion MSI will become a wholly owned subsidiary. 

In 2000, the Oxford Molecular software businesses were acquired by Pharmacopeia Inc., which already had created a sound scientihc software segment with the acquisition of Molecular Simulations Inc. and Synopsys Scientihc Systems Ltd. Pharmacopeia combined its software subsidiaries in June 2001 to form Accelrys, which separated from Pharmacopeia in 2004.
