Permeability/wettability functions

Sec. Ill is concerned with the description of models with directional associative forces, introduced by Wertheim. Singlet and pair theories for these models are presented. However, the main part of this section describes the density functional methodology and shows its application in the studies of adsorption of associating fluids on partially permeable walls. In addition, the application of the density functional method in investigations of wettability of associating fluids on solid surfaces and of capillary condensation in slit-like pores is presented. [Pg.171]

Many materials are employed in the production of soft contact lenses. The material with the widest application in the industry is HEM A [13]. HEM A became a popular soft contact lens because of its clarity, comfort, good vision, and excellent wetting characteristics. HEMA is a hydrogel, and hydrogels are cross-linked polymer networks that are swollen in water. Hydrogels are typically classified by whether they are neutral or ionic. Anyone who has had a piece of dirt in the eye understands the need for good wettability when it comes to a contact lens. The wettability of a soft contact lens in the ocular environment is a function of the surface chemistry while it is hydrated, which determines the biocompatibility of the lens [6]. A lens surface that does not wet will cau.se discomfort and potentially increased deposits. These deposits can affect vision and the physical properties of the lens [3,4]. The major drawback of HEMA is the permeability of the material to oxygen [12]. Extended wear can result in increased vascularization of the cornea... [Pg.905]

CCL operation entails transport of gases, water, electrons, and protons, as well as interfacial transformation of species due to electrochemical reaction and evaporation. Effective parameters that steer the interplay of these processes are proton and electron conductivity diffusion coefficients of oxygen, water vapor, and residual gaseous components liquid water permeability as well as exchange current density and vaporization rate per unit volume. These parameters incorporate information about composition, pore size distribution, pore surface wettability, and liquid water saturation. This section introduces functional relationships between effective properties and structure. [Pg.257]

Battery separators are characterized by numerous properties, including material nature, membrane stractural and functional properties. Material nature includes chemical stability, crystalline structure, hydrophilicity, thermal shrinkage, melting point, M and Mv,/M of polyolefin materials. Structural properties include thickness, porosity, pore size, pore shape, pore tortuosity, and pore distribution. Functional properties include mechanical strength, electrical resistivity, air permeability, thermal shutdown, electrolyte wettability and retention. Many of the above properties are affected with each other and may be in a trade-off relationship. For example, the mechanical strength is affected in opposite manner by the thickness, porosity and permeability, as required by the battery performance. [Pg.342]

In the field of tissue engineering, more information on and a better understanding of the wettability and permeability of nanofiber yams, as well as their structural properties as a function of biodegradation, should lead to the development of highly functional tissue scaffolds and wound dressings. Successful electrospinning of other materials, such as metals and non-oxide ceramics, and better control over the crystallinity of electrospun polymer fibers will lead to significant advances in nanofiber reinforced composite materials. [Pg.67]
