On September 18, 1981, Claude Nichols fought with someone in a bar parking lot. He went into the bar, shooting wildly at his opponent with a. 25 caliber revolver. Three bystanders were wounded, including Joseph Perkins, who, as a result of the gunfire, became permanently paralyzed from the waist down. Nichols was convicted of aggravated battery and sentenced to five years at hard labor. Perkins sued F.I.E. Corporation, the manufacturer of the handgun used by Nichols. The suit was transferred to federal court. [Pg.69]

Twitchell An early process for the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of animal and vegetable fats for making glycerol and soap. The catalyst was a mixture of sulfonated oleic and naphthenic acids and sulfuric acid, known as Twitchell saponifier. Invented in 1897 by E. Twitchell and commercialized by Joslin-Schmidt Company, Cincinnati, OH. Twitchell was awarded the Perkin Medal for this invention by the ACS in 1917. The British soapmakers at that time, Joseph Crosfield and Sons, did not use the process because the products were considered to be too dark in color. [Pg.355]

After World War I, the English baking machinery manufacturer Joseph Baker and Sons took over Werner, Pfleiderer, and Perkins (which had been renamed Perkins Engineers). The new firm was called Baker Perkins [17]. Baker Perkins purchased the Werner-Pfleiderer firm in the USA including the Saginaw facility. They did not challenge Banbury s key patent or manufacture internal mixers for rubber compounding. [Pg.234]
