Periodic table eight-group

In this form, the periodic table of f-elements consists of two periods and eight groups. In the case of trivalent lanthanides this accounts for the fact that the properties studied change in an analogous way in the two periods La-Gd and Gd-Lu. This table is also consistent with the tendency of some lanthanides to appear in the + 2 or + 4 oxidation states. [Pg.45]

A FIGURE 2.13 The Periodic Table Main-Group and Transition Elements The elements in the periodic table fall into columns. The two columns at the left and the six columns at the right comprise the main-group elements. Each of these eight columns is a group or family. [Pg.64]

A We assume that atoms lose or gain relatively few electrons to become ions. Thus, elements that will form cations will be on the left-hand side of the periodic table, while elements that will form anions will be on the right-hand side. The number of electrons lost when a cation forms is the periodic group number the number of electrons added when an anion forms is eight minus the group number. [Pg.21]

The noble gases of Group VIII of the Periodic Table all contain eight electrons in their outer shell. [Pg.13]

Newland s law of octaves chem An arrangement of the elements that predated Mendeleev s periodic table Newland s arrangement was a grouping of the elements in increasing atomic weights (starting with lithium) In horizontal rows of eight elements, with each new row directly beneath the previous one. nti-lonz 16 3v ak-tivz ... [Pg.258]

In general, for groups, when the table is read from left to right, the number of valence electrons in the outer shell of elements increases. For instance, lithium is located at the start of period 2 and has one electron in its outer shell and is found in group 1 (lA), and neon, located at the end of period 2 in group 18 (VIIIA), has eight electrons in its completed outer shell. [Pg.28]

The first volume in this new series will provide a comprehensive survey of research on the inorganic chemistry of elements in the eight main groups of the periodic table from July 1971 to September 1972. (To be published in Autumn 1973)... [Pg.504]

Groups of 68 female B6C3Fi mice, eight to nine weeks of age, were administered dichloromethane (> 99% pure) by whole-body inhalation at concentrations of 0 ppm (control) or 2000 ppm [6940 mg/m ] for various lengths of time over a 104-week period (Table 7). Lung and liver were evaluated histopathologically. Survival was reduced... [Pg.273]

The simple method of drawing electron-dot structures that works well for most compounds of second-row elements sometimes breaks down for compounds that contain elements below the second row of the periodic table. As we saw in Section 6.12, elements in the third row and lower have unfilled d orbitals and are therefore able to expand their valence shell beyond the normal octet of electrons, forming more than the "normal" number of bonds predicted by their group number. In bromine trifluoride, for instance, the bromine atom forms three electron-pair bonds rather than one and has ten electrons in its valence shell rather than eight ... [Pg.256]
