Periodic boundary conditions reorientation

Let the chain obey the periodical boundary conditions and let protons be strongly connected with heavy atoms, so that tunnel proton transitions along the hydrogen bond are negligible in comparison with the reorientation motion of A—H groups. This means that only one proton is localized near each heavy atom in the chain that is, equality + /z/ / i = 1 holds, which makes it possible to introduce the following pseudo-spin operators ... [Pg.483]

The complex rotational behavior of interacting molecules in the liquid state has been studied by a number of authors using MD methods. In particular we consider here the work of Lynden-Bell and co-workers [60-62] on the reorientational relaxation of tetrahedral molecules [60] and cylindrical top molecules [61]. In [60], both rotational and angular velocity correlation functions were computed for a system of 32 molecules of CX (i.e., tetrahedral objects resembling substituted methanes, like CBt4 or C(CH3)4) subjected to periodic boundary conditions and interacting via a simple Lennard-Jones potential, at different temperatures. They observe substantial departures of both Gj 2O) and Gj(() from predictions based on simple theoretical models, such as small-step diffusion or 7-diffusion [58]. Although we have not attempted to quantitatively reproduce their results with our mesoscopic models, we have found a close resemblance to our 2BK-SRLS calculations. Compare for instance our Fig. 13 with their Fig. 1 in [60]. [Pg.188]

Unlike the bulk morphology, block copolymer thin films are often characterized by thickness-dependent highly oriented domains, as a result of surface and interfacial energy minimization [115,116]. For example, in the simplest composition-symmetric (ID lamellae) coil-coil thin films, the overall trend when t>Lo is for the lamellae to be oriented parallel to the plane of the film [115]. Under symmetric boundary conditions, frustration cannot be avoided if t is not commensurate with L0 in a confined film and the lamellar period deviates from the bulk value by compressing the chain conformation [117]. Under asymmetric boundary conditions, an incomplete top layer composed of islands and holes of height Lo forms as in the incommensurate case [118]. However, it has also been observed that microdomains can reorient such that they are perpendicular to the surface [ 119], or they can take mixed orientations to relieve the constraint [66]. [Pg.204]
