Perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer

The reason for Nafion LB-film fabrication was the wish to obtain the highly ordered systems from perfluorinated ion exchange polymer with multilayered structure, where the ionic layers (conductors) would alternate with fluorocarbon polymer layers (insulators), and to investigate the properties of such films.74 This polymer contains a hydrophobic fluorocarbon polymeric chain and hydrophilic ionic groups, so it is sufficiently amphiphilic it has a comblike structure that makes it a suitable polymer for LB-film deposition.

A slurry of 100 g of perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer in 130 ml concentrated HC1 (36%) and 400 ml distilled water is stirred at 50-60°C for 2 h. The aqueous acid is decanted away from the resin and fresh acid/ water solution added. The mixture is heated and stirred for another 2 h. After the third exchange, the resin is isolated by filtration and washed with distilled water until the washings are neutral. The resin is dried in a vacuum oven under N2 at — I I0°C for 6 h. Conversions 95% are obtained with this procedure. 

Trifluoracetic acid,49 KD = 0.66 mol L 1, forms a variety of hydrates such as [H502]+[H(02CCF3)2] >6H20. Another useful strong acid is the solid Nafion H+,50 where Nafion is a perfluorinated ion exchange polymer. 

Another example of coordination of a transition metal into a selected polymer is the use of Nafion resin [7]. Several studies over the past 20 years have demonstrated that the perfluorinated ion-exchange polymer is an excellent support for metal-complex catalysts (Figure 11.1).
