Being married has a stabilizing influence in that I am more focused on what I have to do in my career as opposed to wasting time. My wife knows that as an untenured assistant professor, I need to keep long hours in the lab initially. 1 try to be considerate of her in the actual number of hours I spend in the lab. Because my wife and 1 are employed in professional occupations, 1 know that I will have to scale back once we have children. By then, I plan to have tenure. [Pg.41]

An interviewee from industry commented In certain corporate cultures, I believe management views a married black male more positively than a single black male.  [Pg.41]

Nearly one in ten interviewees had never married. As was the case with the survey respondents, there were striking gender differences with females more likely to have never married. These findings are consistent with those reported by Pearson and Earle (1984) in their study of African American and white doctoral scientists. They found that African American women were far more likely than any race-gender group to have never married. [Pg.41]
