One Cohort V interviewee gave this description My advisor showed me how he wrote grants and prepared for class. In fact, several faculty members gave me their lecture notes when I decided to take an academic job. They really helped me in that way. This excerpt was provided by a Cohort V interviewee Perhaps the most difficult adjustment has been the isolation, especially in terms of my research. Also, having attended a predominately white institution where I received very little encouragement, I still have to fight through a lot of self-doubts. It is a problem for me. Now, I can see how it affects my performance.  

I am very satisfied with my doctoral education because The faculty allowed me to grow and pursue knowledge in a very open way. The professors were marvelous and actively engaged in cross-disciplinary research. Although I was specializing in., I was exposed to some of the leading researchers inj(another chemistry specialty and another scientific discipline). The department was small enough so that I knew everyone. 

A Cohort I interviewee had this to say about the quality of doctoral education  

The resources, interactions, requirements, and professional contact were all state of the art.. enjoyed an international reputation in chemistry. I would sit out in the hallway and discuss with him problems that had occurred in the classroom. Accessibility to the faculty and other resources was nothing short of phenomenal. I know what helped me survive grad school atj(a prestigious department) was the fact that I graduated from a black school that trained be to be a total individual. So, when I came throu a system which was non-supportive of whom I was as a person, not only intellectually but all other parts of me were rejected. Internally, I knew that had the capability and I could succeed.
