Penthrinit

Penthrinits and Gelatin e-Pen thrin its were prepd before WWII for research purposes by the Sociefe Suisse des Explosifs, Gamsen bei Brigg and proved to be outstanding expls. 

Later they proved to be very effective for underwater explns. Two Penthrinits, 1 2 of Table 17 were, accdg to Stettbacher (Ref 6), loaded in 1929—1930 in 2cm shells and tested at Oerlikon Fabrik at muzzle velocity (vQ) 840m/sec. No prematures occurred. The addition of about 15% A1 powder increases the efficiencies of Penthrinits, while high amounts seem to decrease it. For example, addition of 30% A1 to formulation 1 of Gelatine Penthrinits decreased detonation velocity from 8000m/sec to 7200... 

The Gelatine-Penthrinits 1, 2 3 were listed in Table 17, Vol 3 of Encycl, p C443-R, but their properties were not given. 

In the same place compn 4 was listed under the name Gelatine-Penthrinite-Perchlorite, but its properties were not given... 

Six Penthrinits and four Gelatine-Penthrinits formulations are given in Table G17 including some properties... 

In 1929, Stettbacher [90] suggested the use of a mixture of PETN with nitroglycerine, under the name of Penthrinite. Such a mixture may be plastic provided suitable amounts of nitroglycerine and PETN with crystals of a proper size are used and both constituents are thoroughly mixed. Stettbacher recommended a composition ranging with the limits ... 

In his later work Stettbacher developed the idea of using penthrinites as substitutes for dynamite, with the following composition ... 

Gelatine Gamsit. Same as Telsit-Gamsit Gelatine-Penthrinit. A series of expls developed by A.Stettbacher consisting of Penthrinit (PETN + NG) in which collod cotton is incorporated in order. to make the blend more plastic and less exudable. Eg a)PETN 50, NG 35, NGc 11.7 collod cotton 3.3%... 

Stettbacher113 in 1931 described several dynamite-like explosives which contained both PETN and nitroglycerin. He called them by the general name of Penthrinit, and described simple penthrinit, gelatin penthrinit, and ammonpenthrinit. Naoum114 later in the same year reported comparative tests of ammonpenthrinit and gelatin dynamite, as follows. 

Pentrinita (Penthrinit). A very powerful expl blend of PETN 70 and NG 30%, developed prior to WWI by A. Stettbacher of Switzerland (Ref 10). Its props, as reported by Jimenez (Ref 9, p 139), are as follows density, 1.72g/cc brisance by Kast formula, 178 (TNT 86) heat of expin, 1480cal/g temp developed on deton, 4120° vel of deton, 8400m/sec and vol of gases developed on expin at 0° and 760mm, 770 /kg This compn can also be further gelatinized by the addn of Collodion Cotton (CC) to give a...

Stettbacher proposed a mixture of 80 per cent Penthrit and 20 per cent nitroglycerine under the name of Penthrinit as explosive for industrial and military uses. 

Penthrinite containing about 10 per cent Hexogen is another extremely powerful explosive and is called Hexonit.27...
