Penning Ionisation Electron Spectroscopy

Aaonyms PIES (Penning ionisation electron spectroscopy) [Pg.551]

A low energy beam of metastable excited gas atoms is directed at the sample. The interaction with the surface de-excites the atoms and ejects an electron from the surface. This electron is collected by an electron energy analyser to reveal information about the surface electronic structure and bonding geometry. [Pg.551]

Such spectra are representative of, although not identical to, the sample s valence band electronic density of states. [Pg.551]

Vacuum compatible solids. PIES is particularly useful for studying molecular adsorbate overlayer geometry on metallic single crystals. [Pg.551]

PIES reveals information about the valence band electronic density of states of the topmost atomic layer. It also reveals information about the molecular orientation of this layer. [Pg.551]

INS is very similar to MIES (metastable impact electron spectroscopy) or PIES (penning ionisation electron spectroscopy) except that in INS ions are used instead of metastable atoms. [Pg.539]

Penning ionisation electron spectroscopy (PIES) help the assignment... [Pg.105]
