Penicillium frequentans

A compound in the fermentation broth of Penicillium frequentans, named hadacidin (55), was isolated and crystallized as the monosodium salt, C3H4O4N Na. It displays very interesting biological properties (80, 120) and is an anti-tumor agent (55). The pKa values of the ionizable groups are 3.5 and 9.1. A monomethylester, m. p. 71 —72 was obtained by action of diazomethane in ether solution. The structure was deduced by degradation and confirmed by synthesis as N-formylhydroxyaminoacetic acid.
