Penguin Island

The species Trichoderma asperellum isolated from sediment colleded around Penguin Island, Antarctica, contains asperelines A-F, a series of short peptaibols with 10 amino acids, all of them containing the tmusual prolinol as C-terminal part (Ren et al, 2009).

Penguins are social animals they travel, feed, breed, nest, and winter in large groups. On several Antarctic and sub-Antarctic islands, colonies number in the millions. For example, up to two million royal penguins congregate on Macquarie Island, 750 mi (1,200 km) southwest of New Zealand. There are about 10 million birds living on one of the South Sandwich Islands, located north of Antarctica. 

The necessity of a stringent exclusion of any possible contamination when analyzing PCBs below the 10 ng g" level was also stressed by Ballschmiter and coworkers (78). These contaminants were quantified in eggs of penguins and albatrosses from subantarctic areas (Falkland Islands) by GC with EC detection.

On January 24, 1841, these explorers also discovered an island at 78°S and 168°E located off the coast of Victoria Land. The latitude of this island exceeded the most southern position reached by James Weddell, which Ross and Crozier celebrated by issuing double rations of rum to their crews. Ross named the two volcanoes on the island after his ships Erebus and Terror and the island itself is known to us as Ross Island. Captain Crozier s name identifies a prominent peninsula on Ross Island where the famous rookery of Emperor Penguins is located.

The island is separated from the mainland of Antarctica by McMurdo Sound where the sea ice breaks up in late December allowing cargo ships to dock at McMurdo Station on the southern tip of the Hut Point Peninsula.
