One of the most spectacular discoveries of the 1963-64 field season was made by the Minnesota party under direction of Campbell Craddock (9) in the Sentinel Range of the Ellsworth Mountains. They submitted a sample of high rank coal accompanied by characteristic elements of the Glossopteris flora at a locality about 600 or 700 miles north of the nearest similar occurrences in the Transantarctic Mountains, intermediate in position between them and the Falkland Islands, where a similar flora (but no coal) has been reported from the work of early Swedish Expeditions. 

The necessity of a stringent exclusion of any possible contamination when analyzing PCBs below the 10 ng g" level was also stressed by Ballschmiter and coworkers (78). These contaminants were quantified in eggs of penguins and albatrosses from subantarctic areas (Falkland Islands) by GC with EC detection.

The involvement of southeast Asia, Tibet, and the parts of northern China in Gondwana was suggested by Stauffer and Gobbett (1972), Crawford (1974), and Audley-Charles (1983). The Falkland Plateau and the Falkland Islands were originally located between southern Africa and South America prior to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean in the Early Cretaceous (Mitchell et al. 1986) and were later moved to their present position off the coast of Patagonia by the development of the Scotia Arc (Dalziel and Elliot 1971 Martin etal. 1981). 

This realm is definitively known exclusively from the southern two-thirds of South America and north-west Africa. The Disa Siltstone fauna of South Africa is now (Boucot, 1999) considered to be of latest Ordovician, Hirnantian age, although an Early Llandovery age was considered earlier. If shallower-water brachiopod faunas of Silurian age are recovered from southern Africa they would be expected to be similar to those of the Afro-South American Realm known from so many South American localities, as is also the case with the Falkland Islands, where Silurian rocks are currently unrecognised. The northernmost occurrence is in the Amazon Basin, with numerous occurrences from the Titicaca region of southern Peru and adjacent Bolivia southerly into northwestern Argentina (in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy).
