Oedogonium cardiacum exposed to hexachlorobenzene for 33 days (Isensee etaL, 1976). Invertebrate species similarly sorb monocyclic compounds directly from the water, but food may also be a primary route of entry, particularly for the less soluble derivatives such as hexachlorobenzene. Isensee et al, (1976) reported that exposure of gastropods and cladocerans to this latter compound resulted in concentration factors of 910 to 1500, whereas the corresponding values for grass shrimp Palaemonetes pugio and pink shrimp Penaeus duorarum were 2000 to 4100. [Pg.57]

Homarine, a betaine that is widespread among marine organisms, owes its name to the lobster Homarus amer-icanus, from which it was isolated for the first time in 1933 by Hoppe-Seyler, and arsenobetaine was isolated in 1977 from the rock lobster Palinurus longipes cygnus. For the shrimp Penaeus duorarum it has been established that homarine acts as a transmethylating agent (Netherton and Gurin, 1982). [Pg.2049]
