Pectin Metronidazole

Although studies suggest that dietary incorporation of fermentable carbohydrates increases microfloral metabolism of xenobiotics, Rowland et al. (23) reported that dietary pectin did not uniformly increase the activity of intestinal microfloral nitroreductases that is, dietary pectin increased the cecal nitroreduction of p-nitrobenzoic acid and metronidazole, but not p-nitrophenol, 2-amino-4-nitrotoluene, or 4-amino-2-nitrotoluene. The presence of intes-... [Pg.49]

The absorption of metronidazole is unaffected by kaolin-pectin, but it is slightly reduced by an aluminium hydroxide antacid and colestyramine, although not to a clinically relevant extent. [Pg.318]

The bioavailability of a single 500-mg dose of metronidazole in 5 healthy subjeets was not significantly changed by 30 mL of a kaolin-pectin antid-iarrhoeal mixture. However, a 14.5% reduction in metronidazole bioavailability occurred with 30 mL of an aluminiiim hydroxide/simeticone suspension, and a 21.3% reduction occurred with a single 4-g dose of colestyramine. The clinical importance of these reductions is probably small, and no special precautions seem necessary. [Pg.319]
