Pearson Correlation Coefficient Sample Problem

The safety manager for CJD Package Delivery wishes to determine if there is a relationship between the number of traffic accidents reported in month by delivery personnel and the number of deliveries made to Big City, USA. Over the past 12 months data was collected to determine this. Since it is hypothesized that the number of deliveries to Big City influences the number of accidents, the number of trips is the independent variable (X) and the number of accidents is the dependent variable (Y). The data obtained is as follows  [Pg.78]

Month Number of Accidents Reported (Y) Y2 Number of Trips to Big City, USA (X) X2 XY [Pg.78]

Results indicate there is a strong positive relationship (r =. 93) between the number of accidents and the number of monthly trips made to Big City, USA. [Pg.79]
