PD-ANN

As already mentioned, use of a less-than-optimal ANN leaves the researcher wondering whether any failures in classification are attributable to the non-optimized architecture rather than a consequence of limitations in spectral quality or information content. Complete architecture optimization by manual trial and error is possible but usually impractical. The PD-ANN s ability to develop a global optimum configuration/solution for distinguishing a set of bacterial strains allows the researcher to probe the limits of spectral information content with respect to questions of inherent taxonomic power. [Pg.116]

These examples illustrate the power of proper ANN feature space optimization. In all the examples discussed, the limits of the type of information that could be gleaned from the Salmonella PyMAB spectra were probed. The PD-ANN s automated optimization removed the issue of methodological uncertainty and enabled a focus on questions of Py-MAB-MS spectral information content and its potential use for rapid strain ID.
