On the morrow, it was given out that Henry had died of despair at the loss of his cause. His corpse was shown at Paul s, his face uncovered, that the commons would see and know it to be true. If they ran forward with kerchiefs to soak them in his blood for a holy relic, that did less harm to the realm than if the blood had stayed in his living body. [Pg.250]

By and large, a pejorative view of the methodological sophistication of chemical science has prevailed, notably, in comparison to physics. The structure of scientific explanation in chemistry often has been deemed child s play, or kitchen work. Chemistry frequently is characterized as a handmaiden, "like the maid occupied with daily civilization she is busy with fertilizers, medicines, glass, [and] insecticides. .. for which she dispenses the recipes."3 The Toulouse physicist Henri Bouasse enraged his colleague Paul Sabatier, who was awarded a Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1912, by jibing that chemists only aim to "faire la cuisine."4... [Pg.75]

Marie Curie named polonium after her native country of Poland. She is also given credit for coining the world radioactivity. She is one of only two chemists to receive two Nobel Prizes. In 1903 both the Curies and Antoine-Henri Becquerel (1852—1908) shared the Nobel Prize for Physics for their work on radioactivity in 1911 Madame Curie received the prize for chemistry for the discovery of radium and plonium. (The other scientist who received two Nobel Prizes was Linus Pauling [1901-1994], one for chemistry in 1954, and a Nobel Peace... [Pg.242]
